NESO

NESO is a UK-based, publicly owned energy system operator formed in October 2024, succeeding the Electricity System Operator (ESO) through a £630 million government acquisition. As the first organisation to oversee both electricity and gas systems under a unified, independent framework, NESO spans real-time system operation and long-term strategic planning across Great Britain. Established under the Energy Act 2023 and regulated by Ofgem, it operates on a not-for-profit basis—funded through energy bills—while pursuing statutory duties to deliver net-zero emissions, secure energy supply, and promote efficient, economical coordination of the energy system. NESO’s leadership includes an Executive Leadership Team and a dedicated Board with independent directors, all steering the organisation toward a resilient, decarbonised energy future.
