Government Economic Service

The Government Economic Service is the UK’s largest employer of professional economists, providing economic analysis, policy advice, and impact evaluation to government departments, agencies, and regulators. Operating under HM Treasury’s oversight, the GES plays a critical role in shaping fiscal policy, public investment, regulatory decisions, and macroeconomic forecasting. Economists in the GES work on a wide range of issues, from climate policy and labour markets to transport modelling and trade strategy. The service also runs a competitive graduate programme and summer internships aimed at attracting analytical talent from top universities. GES professionals are embedded within departments such as BEIS, DfT, DWP, and DEFRA, offering evidence-based insight that informs policy choices and spending priorities. The service promotes rigour, independence, and public accountability in the use of economic evidence in government.
